Choosing the right gutter colors largely depend on existing exterior elements. In this blog, GAF Master Elite® roofer Ken Morton & Sons shares some tips on choosing gutter colors for your home.
Match the Roof or Trim
Exterior color palettes are dominated by the roof and siding colors. Being the two biggest parts of a home’s exterior, their colors are the most visible from the curb and should complement each other. The trim is typically the third color that neatly ties these two colors together. The gutters, being attached to the roof, in close proximity with the trim, should match either of the two.
You may find this restricting, but given the possible color choices available, having a narrow selection of colors to choose from can actually make color selection easier. Many roofing contractors recommend choosing the roof color, or a similar shade of it, as it lets the gutters blend in. The only exception to the rule is if wide trim is installed on your home, in which case the gutters should match the trim.
Consider Copper Gutters
Copper gutters are unique in that it doesn’t require any coating and it always looks better when installed bare. Copper works with any exterior color palette, so matching it with any component is unnecessary. In addition to its aesthetic benefits, copper gutters offer advantages such as long life span, durability and low maintenance qualities. Copper is also known for the green patina that forms on it when exposed to oxygen. Oxidation begins days after installation, but if you want to preserve, the “like new” look, there are coatings available that can be applied right after installation.
Avoid Painting Light Over Dark Colors
If you are repainting your existing gutters, remember not to apply a light color over a dark one. Certain types of paint bleed into each other and could result in uneven color spotting. Scrape the old paint off, sand off and repair corroded areas and apply fresh sealant before applying a fresh coat of paint.
