Replacing Your Gutters for the First Time

The importance of your house’s roof and siding often makes the gutters an afterthought. An effective gutter system, though, can be just as important to your home’s well-being. Ken Morton & Sons LLC, roofing contractors, helps you choose the right gutters when it’s time to replace your old ones.

Here’s what you need to know from your GAF Master Elite® roofer, Ken Morton & Sons LLC.

Sectional Vs. Seamless

Consider whether to buy sectional or seamless gutters first. Sectional gutters are either glued or snapped together to form the length of the gutter you need. Though inexpensive, they can develop leaks at the joints over time. Seamless gutters, on the other hand, are custom-sized to fit your roof. This makes leaks less likely to occur.

The Right Material

Gutters come from a variety of materials, so choose what’s right for you. Vinyl is the least expensive but can become brittle and break in cold climates. Also, exposure to sunlight will cause it to break down over time. Aluminum is inexpensive, lightweight, rust-proof and comes in a variety of colors. Galvanized steel is durable and rust resistant for up to 20 years. It’s good for homes constantly exposed to extreme weather conditions. Copper is exceptionally durable, is h3 and rust-proof. It also develops a greenish patina as it ages, making it ideal for period homes. With proper installation, it should last 75-100 years.

K-Style vs. Half Round

Gutters come in either a K-style or in U-shape known as a half round gutter. K-style is more modern and is the majority of rain gutters found today. Half round gutters are more traditional and chosen for a historical look. Both styles provide good drainage, so the choice is usually based on aesthetics.
