How Excess Moisture Can Damage Your Roofing System

We all know that too much moisture can damage even the most durable roofing system. What most people don’t know, however, is how the damage gets started in the first place. What most roofers want you to know is that damage caused by excess moisture can actually come from inside your house rather than outside. Here’s how.

Condensation Caused by Poor Ventilation

A good roof should be backed by an equally good ventilation system. Proper ventilation allows air to flow across the underside of the roof through strategically installed vents at the soffit and then exit at the ridge or gables.

This airflow prevents condensation buildup by preventing warm, moist air from settling against the surface of your roofing components, particularly your roof deck. Ventilation also helps push out air rising from the rest of your home out of the attic. Without proper ventilation, it is not unlikely that you will be spending hundreds of dollars on roof repairs due to excess moisture.

Internal Sources

If you live in a very humid environment, the moisture that is present in the air can be enough to give you major problems. Moist air from your bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, or any other area in your house could also leak into your attic. This problem can be compounded by a lack of ventilation. If you notice a moisture problem from inside your house, be sure to have your roof inspected by a professional to avoid damaging your roof.
