If it’s too good to be true, then it probably is. This is especially true for roofing contractors who come up with suspiciously low estimates when it comes to repairing or replacing your roof. An impossibly low estimate is a tell-tale sign that you are dealing with a shoddy roofer who isn’t above cutting corners at your expense. In today’s post, Ken Morton & Sons, LLC shares a few red flags to watch out for to avoid dealing with unscrupulous roofing companies.
1. Using Less Nails or a Staple Gun
A roofing project can go more quickly if a staple gun is used rather than nails. While a staple gun can get the job done faster and may seem like a good idea, this is definitely not recommended. Staples do a poor job in holding down roofing materials and can not penetrate wood the way a nail can. Using fewer nails is also a sign of shoddy workmanship as most roofing manufacturers specify a certain amount of nails to be used in each shingle.
2. Covering Old Shingles With New Ones
Re-shingling is a labor-intensive job and some roofers will opt to put new shingles over old ones to save on time but this is no excuse to cut corners. Putting new shingles over old ones can create space between them where debris and moisture can collect which can then, over time, weaken and compromise your entire roofing system.
3. Using Second-Rate Shingles
Another way a roofer might cut corners is to use second-grade shingles which are essentially factory overruns that did not pass the manufacturer’s quality standards. While second-grade shingles are considerably cheaper, you will actually be spending more money in the long run because these shingles will have a much shorter lifespan due to their flaws.
